Bandmaster - Larry Gilbo
Lawrence J. Gilbo, Jr., Lt. Col., USAF, Retired
Larry has been the Waltham American
Legion Bandmaster since 1997. A veteran who served in Korea and Vietnam,
he was a Marine from 1950 to 1960, then in the Army Reserve, 1960-63, and
Air Force Reserve, 1965-92.
An accomplished trumpet and trombone player,
Larry has a professional diploma from Berklee College of Music, a B.A.
in Music Education from the Boston Conervatory of Music, and an M.A. in Counseling
Psychology from the University of Arizona. He was a music educator
in the public schools from 1964 until 1987, serving as instrumental music
supervisor in Penacook, NH, 1964-65; Braintree, MA, 1965-67; and Needham,
MA, 1967-87. During this period, Larry was also the Commander and Conductor
of the 567th USAF Band (Otis Air Force Base) from 1968 to 1981.
Larry has performed as soloist with
numerous bands, including the 567th USAF Band, the 94th Infantry Division
Band, and USMC bands at Parris Island and Cherry Point, and the 2nd and 3rd
Division and 3rd Airwing Bands. He also solos with our Legion Band
and with the Soft Touch Dance Band.
